Vital Records
The Rutherford Health Department maintains records of births, marriage, and deaths that have occurred in Rutherford since 1878. Civil Unions are maintained since 2007 and domestic partnerships since 2004. Records are kept in the municipality where the event occurred in New Jersey and with the State Registrar in Trenton, NJ.
The Rutherford Health Department can only provide certified copies of birth, death, marriages, civil unions, and domestic partnerships that occurred in Rutherford.
Obtaining a Certified Copy of a Vital Record
Certified copies of a vital record can be obtained by mail and/or in person by completing the Vital record application and providing an acceptable form of identification. All documents used for identification must be current and not expired. If bills are used, they must not be more than 90 days old.
If you are mailing in the application please do not send in original ID documents. Only copies are required. In addition, you must enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of the certified copies.
Fees and Payment
The cost for each certified copy is $5.00. Payments can be made via cash (exact change preferred), check, or money order, and should be payable to the Rutherford Health Department.
